Kitchen Remodeling Process

Expert advice and guidance to help you with your remodeling process.

Getting Started With Your New Kitchen

The Kitchen Place has been installing dream kitchens for over 30 years!!!   You can count on us to give you the expert advice and guidance you need to make the right decisions about your home. We'll be here to help you through each step of your project without high pressure sales tactics.  That's not how we are.  Many of our clients say that is why they chose us.

Step-by-Step Process

STEP 1: Meet With Us

Our first meeting with you is a getting-to-know-you session.  We highly recommend that you bring in your room's dimensions and photographs, if you can.  We always do a home visit prior to ordering to make sure your kitchen fits perfectly.  If you're unsure what exactly you need to measure, watch this ehow video:  Be sure to also measure your ceiling height and the position of windows and doors.

We'll ask you...
About your needs, your style and your budgetary constraints, such as:

  • What is your style?  Do you have any inspiration photos? Have you been to
  • What door styles, woods and finishes do you prefer?
  • What appliances are you considering?
  • What is the age and style of your home?
  • What countertop materials do you want to learn more about?
  • How is your lighting?  Do you need a lighting plan done?
  • What is your budget?

You'll ask us...

About our services and products as well as:

  • Design and installation capabilities
  • Examples of our work
  • Customer references and testimonials

If this meeting takes place in your home, we will measure your kitchen's dimensions and possibly take some pictures, too. This helps us to document the space we're working with and to remember how the kitchen relates to the surrounding rooms.

STEP 2: Determine a Budget

A good rule of thumb is to budget no more than 20% of the value of your home. Below are budget examples for an average sized kitchen.

Budget Kitchen Remodel - New stock or semi-custom cabinets, rolled edge laminate tops, stainless steel sink, faucet & limited installation.

Mid-range Kitchen Remodel - Semi-custom cabinets, beveled edge or solid surface countertops, composite sink, faucet & limited installation.

Upscale Kitchen Remodel - Custom cabinets, granite countertops, undermount sink, faucet & limited installation.

STEP 3: Create a Design

Our preliminary designs will be developed on a computer using 3-D design software. These depictions are truly amazing in their realistic appearance and accuracy.

We will also produce a proposed floor plan and elevations depicting cabinetry, counter and fixture placement. We will work with you to refine the design.

Depending on the scope of the project, a small design retainer that can be applied to the purchase of your kitchen may be requested.  We do not give out our designs until a deposit is given or design retainer is paid.  Once that is done, we will give you detailed layouts, elevations and beautiful color renderings.

STEP 4: Select the Right Materials & Prepare Estimate

No dream kitchen is complete without the selection of materials, ranging from cabinetry to countertops to backsplashes. Even small details such as moldings and decorative hardware can make an ordinary kitchen truly unique.  You will learn about the plethora of choices available and the impact different product options ultimately have on the price of your new kitchen.

We will suggest materials based on your budget and prepare an estimate just for your kitchen.  We'll include everything you need and quote it by line item.  We can offer you one of all of the following:  Cabinets, countertops, hardware, plumbing fixtures, appliances, tile backsplashes, flooring, lighting...and we can also offer you cabinet installation and electrical and plumbing work.  Let us know how much or how little you want us to manage for you.  Once you're ready to proceed with your new kitchen, we'll meet again to go over the order in detail, documenting doorstyle, wood, finish...etc. and write up the paperwork.  We can usually start your kitchen in 3-5 weeks after all the materials are ordered and delivered.

STEP 5: Install Your Dream Kitchen (Optional)

The installation process is oftentimes the step that most homeowners dread the most. However, with our process, most of customers are pleasantly surprised, not only with the quality of the installation, but in the speediness. We use a core group of installers who are only committed to kitchen installations. In fact, one of our installation teams has been with us for over 25 years. With this level of skill and experience, they are truly master craftsmen, not just "installers." An average installation for just cabinets takes approximately 2-5 days. Of course, this can vary depending on the scope of your project. For a major remodel project, plan on a 6-8 week timeline from demo to finished kitchen.   In any event, our goal is to get the job done quickly so that the disruption to you and your family is minimal.

With us, installation is optional.  If you choose to do the install yourself or hire your own contractor, that is fine with us.  We will still be happy to work with you on design and supplying your materials only.  If you already have someone in mind, we are happy to partner with them.  We have worked with many builders in the Dayton area for over 30 years now.
